While acknowledging many of the game’s strengths, some critics still criticized its shallow portrayal of the cyberpunk genre, while also ironically identifying related themes such as anti-capitalism and anarchism handled in the game.
Cyberpunk 2077 is a variation of the role-playing video game developed and released by CD Projekt Red and published by CD Projekt in 2020. Adapted from the Cyberpunk series, the game takes place in Night City, a dystopian open world with six different regions. Players play the V character, who has options such as hacking, mechanical dexterity, ranged weapon use and melee combat in the game played from a first-person perspective.
Cyberpunk 2077 is inspired by the 1982 movie Blade Runner, the manga and anime series Ghost in the Shell, and the video games System Shock (1994) and Deus Ex (2000).
Initial reviews were based solely on the PC version of the game, as it was the only version available to critics and press groups. Some of the reviews later added that there were serious performance differences between the console version and the PC version.
